World champion Marc Marquez signed of the 2017 MotoGP season with the fastest lap of the twoday Valencia test, the Spaniard 0.403 seconds clear of Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa.

However, before he could improve, Miller crashed at Turn 10 and did not return for some time as his GP17 was repaired. This off meant the rest stayed in their garages until the temperature had risen a little more.

20 minutes into hour two saw several riders head out, with KTM’s Pol Espargaro going top with a 1m31.681s, before Marquez set his best lap of the test with a 1m30.288s.

Once again, the factory Honda duo of Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, and LCR’s Cal Crutchlow, spent more time running the 2017 and 2018 prototype RC213Vs backtoback.

Marquez’ time stood until the final hour, when he bettered it with a 1m30.037s on the 2017 bike. A followup tour saw him lower his best pace to a 1m30.037s , and this remained unchallenged through to the chequered flag.

Teammate Pedrosa also set his best lap – a 1m30.436s – on the 2017 bike, the Valencia Grand Prix winner edging Tech3 Yamaha’s Johann Zarco in third by 0.003s.

The Frenchman was second fastest on Tuesday on the 2017 YZRM1 chassis despite a small crash in the afternoon, and spent all of Wednesday running that bike while fifthplaced Maverick Vinales split his time once again between the 2016, 2017 and hybrid chassis.

Valentino Rossi opted to run the 2016 M1 chassis with the 2018 engine on one of his bikes and was seventh, with LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow a few hundredths ahead of him.

The factory Ducati duo of Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso had several new chassis components to try this test, as well as a new front fork from Ohlins. Both completed their programs early, with Lorenzo half a second off the pace in fourth and Dovizioso a further 1.2s adrift in 15th.

Miller brushed off his early fall to post a 1m30.860s to go eighth ahead of Andrea Iannone, who completed 48 laps on Wednesday having missed Tuesday’s running along with 14thplaced teammate Alex Rins due to illness.

Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro completed the top 10 ahead of KTMmounted brother Pol, who crashed halfway through the day and suffered a technical issue two hours from the end. Teammate Bradley Smith was 12th.

Franco Morbidelli ended the day as top rookie despite an early tumble at Turn 10, the reigning Moto2 champion just 1.7s off the pace in 16th and 0.061s ahead of LCR’s Takaaki Nakagami – who also fell at Turn 6 towards the end of the day.

Fellow rookie Xavier Simeon was 20th on the Avintia GP16, while Ducati stablemates Karel Abraham and Alvaro Bautista withdrew from the test having taken heavy knocks in crashes on Tuesday.
