Jorge Lorenzo does not feel he hindered MotoGP teammate Andrea Dovizioso’s Valencia race, and instead reckons he helped the Italian to improve his pace despite being ordered to let him overtake.

Dovizioso needed to win Sunday’s MotoGP finale and hoped eventual world champion Marc Marquez finished outside of the top 11 to overturn his 21point deficit.

Slotting into fifth behind Lorenzo after the first lap, Lorenzo was issued the ‘suggested mapping 8’ order from his team to relinquish the position to the Italian.

However, Lorenzo ignored this and continued to do so as the team kept showing him the message to move aside.

Lorenzo – who crashed with six laps to go, as did Dovizioso – says he would have moved over if Marquez’s situation in the race changed, but feels his actions were ‘best for the team and for Dovi‘.

“I saw the messages, but even looking at this ‘suggestion’ I kept pushing until the end, said Lorenzo.

“My feeling was the truth because I helped him to improve this one or two tenths of pace to be closer to the first group.

“My intention was to arrive to the first group – like I did because I was behind Pedrosa – and if Dovizioso was on my wheel and had the option to win I would let him pass.

“Unfortunately was not like that.

“If I saw that Marquez had crashed I would let him go. What more can I do? I tried to make my best for the team, for me and for Dovi.

“Maybe in some corners Dovi was close and I slowed down a little bit to give him some space, but in general terms over 30 laps, having my Ducati bike in front of him make him improve.”

Lorenzo revealed Ducati technical chief Gigi Dall’Igna spoke with him regarding team orders prior to the Malaysian Grand Prix, but no such meeting took place ahead of the title decider – though he was aware of what he might have had to do to help Dovizioso.

“I spoke with Gigi in Malayisa before the race, but I didn’t speak this time.

“But I am not stupid and I know exactly what I had to do.

“I didn’t mae the suggestion. I decided on my own and I thought it was the best thing to do for all.

Gigi asked me if I saw the messages and I told him that, for me, it was the best thing to do.

“He talked with Dovi and he would say my wheel helped him to arrive.

“I went also to Dovi to explain why I kept pushing, and he said ‘I did not have anything more.’”
