Honda junior driver Nirei Fukuzumi has taken pole position for the Jerez GP3 feature race after setting a last-gasp time in qualifying in a potential championship-deciding weekend, creating an ART 1-2-3.

Fukuzumi set a time of 1m30.678s as the session ended to displace Renault academy racer Jack Aitken from the top after he had moved ahead Mercedes-backed championship leader George Russell.

Russell has a 43-point lead and needs to either outscore Aitken by six points, or five and have Aitken not win a race this weekend, to win the title with a maximum of 48 remaining in Abu Dhabi. Fukuzumi is now 59 adrift of his team-mate.

Red Bull-backed Dan Ticktum was the fastest of the drivers in the 1m31s bracket, finishing ahead of Anthoine Hubert.

Jenzer’s Alessio Lorandi was sixth above Dorian Boccolacci and other Red Bull junior Niko Kari.

Sauber development driver Tatiana Calderon and Steijn Schothorst rounded out the top 10.

Ferrari academy member Giuliano Alesi – and son of former F1 driver Jean – is set to start in 11th on the grid.

Haas development racer Arjun Maini is expected to begin the race on the back row of the grid after only outqualifying Bruno Baptista.
