Audi launches first works Formula E challenger
Audi has revealed its first Formula E car after completing its takeover of the ABT squad, ahead of next week’s official tests.
The manufacturer had been supporting the Schaeffler ABT team since the season one and steadily increased its involvement. It completed the takeover in July, showing its commitment to FE.
The Audi e-tron FE04’s green and white livery, a strong contrast to the red and yellow of its predecessors, is symbolic to the change at the team.
Beneath the surface, the car uses a single-speed gearbox and a “completely new” powertrain.
“Together with our technology partner Schaeffler, we have developed a completely new powertrain,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass.
“You can immediately tell this by looking at the new carbon housing of the powertrain. The car also sounds different because we’re pursuing new avenues in technology.”
There’s more change behind the scenes as 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Allan McNish takes over as team principal, having spent last season as a special advisor.
The driver line up, however, remains unchanged.
Reigning champion Lucas di Grassi will adopt the race number #1 after his success in the 2016-17 season. Team-mate Daniel Abt will join him as an Audi factory driver.
