‘Zero road relevance’ in modern F1 claims Horner

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes Formula 1’s current engines have ‘zero’ road relevance.

F1 switched to hybrid engines in 2014 and discussions are already underway for the new specification of power unit due in 2021.

Speaking in Friday’s press conference ahead of Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix, Horner clearly outlined what he thought should be the main priorities for the new regulations.

“There is zero road relevance what we have here,” claimed Horner.

“The engines make no relevance to what is happening in everyday road car use and the aerodynamics don’t crossover.

“F1 is an entertainment and a sport which is why people watch it to see the best drivers in the best car. It should be predominately about the drivers and of course then the team element as well.

“F1 is about emotion and drivers racing wheel to wheel – man and machine at the limit. It needs to look great, be a real challenge for the drivers and sound fantastic. They are the three elements we need to get back.”

Horner categorically ruled out a deal with Porsche when its contract expires with Renault.

“There should be another announcement fairly soon that won’t be with Porsche. It isn’t a Porsche one,” he added.

“There is an awful lot of speculation in this paddock and all I can tell you is we have a fixed contract for next year and anything about 2019 is purely speculation at this point.

“There will be a lot of permutations people may dream up, some wide of the mark, but 2018 is what we are focused on.

“We have a relationship with a motor manufacturer already and you haven’t got to be a rocket scientists to work out what that is.”
