Four US cities express interest in F1 race, Long Beach not among them
Formula 1 boss Chase Carey has confirmed four major American cities have expressed an interest in hosting a race in the future.
One of the desires of the new American owners of the sport, Liberty Media, was to expand their reach in their home market, introducing F1 to ‘destination cities’ including New York, Miami, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
Carey has recently revealed to Racer he has received interest from each, with a view of bringing at least a second event beyond Austin to the US.
“We have interest from each of those; we have interest from more than one in a number of them, but I think we’re not going to publicly play people against each other.
“We want to find the right platform with the right partners, the right opportunity, the right place and the right type of event that will capture peoples’ imagination.”
Referring to adding a third or even fourth event in the US, Carey said, “I think you start with one. I think you learn from the one and take what you learn. But yeah, I think our hope would be that down the road it would be more than one.
“That’s far enough down the road and I don’t want everyone focusing on numbers. But if the sport can be what we think it can be then we hope there’s more than one.
“But the focus right now is really on adding that second race to Austin and trying to make sure it is what we want it to be.”
That second race is unlikely to be Long Beach though. The incumbent Grand Prix Association of Long Beach has won the contract for the Grand Prix and will host IndyCar through to 2023.
