Vettel fastest as Kubica and Norris make their mark

Sebastian Vettel ended the final day of testing at the Hungaroring fastest as Robert Kubica made his first appearance in a modern hybrid Formula 1 car as did McLaren’s young driver Lando Norris.

Much of the attention on the session was on the Renault garage which saw Robert Kubica make a bumpy start to his day, the Pole bumped into the side of garage doors which knocked off Nico Hulkenberg’s name above the garage.

After completing 142 laps the 32-year old ended the day fourth fastest, completing two full race distances of the 2.7 miles circuit, questions will now be asked all across the summer break as to where the future of Kubica lies within F1.

While the focus was elsewhere, Norris made use of the McLaren to post the second fastest time of the day with a 1m17.385s, while it may have been on ultra-soft tyres it was still a time which would have beaten Fernando Alonso’s Q3 time from Saturday.

GP3 championship leader George Russell continued his work with his second day in the Mercedes W08, this even included testing a new version of the halo head protection concept in the morning, the Briton ended the day eighth fastest with 90 laps under his belt.

Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kyvat split testing duties for Toro Rosso across the day completing 122 laps between them, finishing the day fifth and sixth respectively.

Mercedes DTM title-chaser Lucas Auer completed a further 49 laps in the Force India VJM10 and finished in seventh place, F3’s Nikita Mazepin couldn’t beat Auer’s time in the afternoon session and ended up ninth.

Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly drove the RB13 for the day as the Frenchman also racked up the mileage with 107 laps to his name, finishing the session 10th fastest.

Formula 2 driver Luca Ghiotto drove for Williams on the final day of the young driver test and did finish 11th fastest, but the young Italian completed the most laps of the day out of all the other drivers, clocking up a massive 162 laps.

Santino Ferrucci who recently got a call up to Formula 2 was in the Haas for the second day, the young American put in 116 laps around the Hungaroring despite ending up 12th fastest on the day.

Sauber ran Formula 2 race winner Nobuharu Matsushita in the C36 for the day with the Honda young driver having clocked up 121 laps for the Swiss team.

There will be no further testing until after the season has finished in Abu Dhabi at the end of November. After the race, there will be a Pirelli tyre test to evaluate the 2018 compounds ahead of the new season.
