Lewis Hamilton dominated on home turf this weekend as his victory at the Silverstone Circuit meant he matched Jim Clark’s record of five victories at the British Grand Prix.
Valtteri Bottas crossed the line in second place to complete a solid Mercedes 1 – 2, despite starting from ninth on the grid after incurring a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change.
The strong performance from Mercedes means that they are now 55 points ahead of Ferrari in the constructors’ championship.
Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen completed the podium. The Finn would have crossed the line in second if it wasn’t for one of his tyres collapsing at the death.
Both Red Bulls drove solid races as Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo crossed the line in fourth and fifth respectively and Nico Hulkenberg equalled his best finish of the season in sixth.
A tyre failure for Sebastian Vettel on the penultimate lap also meant that the four-time world champion could only finish seventh and is now just one point ahead of Hamilton in the drivers’ championship. Esteban Ocon, Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa rounded out the top 10.
Here’s the ratings from the race.
LEWIS HAMILTON - 10
Lewis Hamilton was untouchable all weekend, claiming a sublime pole position and completely dominating the race. The Brit had the perfect getaway off the line and controlled the race, leading every lap as he equalled Jim Clark’s record of five British Grand Prix wins.
VALTTERI BOTTAS - 9
Bottas drove a remarkable race to cross the line in second and complete a Mercedes 1 – 2, after a five place grid penalty for a gearbox change saw the Finn start the race from ninth. Bottas did have a bit of luck on his side with Ferrari’s tyre woes, but he drove a faultless race and completed some superb overtakes.
KIMI RAIKKONEN- 8
Raikkonen drove a steady race and would have secured a solid second place if it wasn’t for his tyre failure right at the death. Raikkonen out-qualified and out-drove his team-mate Sebastian Vettel, as he put in a strong performance for Ferrari this weekend.
MAX VERSTAPPEN - 8
A brilliant getaway off the line saw Verstappen overtake Vettel to move up into third position. The Dutchman held off Vettel fantastically until the first round of pits stops. In the end it was just Red Bull’s strategy that prevented Verstappen from gaining a higher place finish.
DANIEL RICCIARDO - 10
Arguably driver of the day, Daniel Ricciardo secured a fantastic fifth place finish after starting from the back of the grid on what was a good day for the Red Bull team. Ricciardo completed some daring overtakes down the inside at Stowe corner to rightfully earn his fifth place finish.
NICO HULKENBERG - 9
Renault appear to be a team on the up this season with Hulkenberg’s sixth place finish securing some valuable points for the team. The Force Indias behind posed no real threat on the German as he drove a clean and steady race to match his best result this season.
SEBASTIAN VETTEL - 5
A poor getaway off the line for Vettel saw Verstappen instantly storm past him into third place. Vettel was unable to get past Verstappen until the first round of pit stops when Ferrari exercised the ‘undercut’. Bottas was later able to drive past Vettel with ease as the German looked massively off the pace. A tyre blow-out on the penultimate lap further ruined Vettel’s race as he crossed the line in seventh, resulting in Hamilton closing the gap to just one point in the drivers’ championship.
ESTEBAN OCON - 8
A quick start off the line saw Ocon coolly overtake his more experienced team-mate Sergio Perez. Ocon drove a clean race and had the edge on Perez throughout.
SERGIO PEREZ - 7
It was a quiet weekend by Perez’s standards as he was somewhat out-shone by his team-mate during the race. Neither Force India was able to match the race pace of Nico Hulkenberg’s Renault.
FELIPE MASSA - 7
Massa could only secure one point for the Williams team as he rounded off the top 10. After a poor qualifying saw him start the race from 14th, there was little more that Massa could do.
STOFFEL VANDOORNE - 8
This was by far Vandoorne’s strongest race weekend of the season after finally out-qualifying his team-mate Fernando Alonso. Vandoorne just missed out on a top 10 position after a slow pit stop allowed Massa to get past him.
KEVIN MAGNUSSEN - 7
Magnussen drove a quiet race after nearly being taken out on the opening lap by the two Toro Rosso’s. The Dane’s race pace was good but he was unable to fight for a points position.
ROMAIN GROSJEAN - 5
A poor start from Grosjean saw him drop a place at lights out and ultimately get stuck in traffic later on in the race. He finished behind his teammate Magnussen in what was a sombre weekend for the Frenchman.
MARCUS ERICSSON - 8
Ericsson will be pleased with his performance during the race as he finished ahead of his team-mate, a Williams and a Toro Rosso. The Swede could not have asked for much more from his struggling Sauber.
DANIIL KVYAT - 5
After causing the collision which ended his teammate’s race on the opening lap and gaining a drive through penalty as a result, Kvyat all but ruined his British Grand Prix early on.
PASCAL WEHRLEIN - 6
A poor weekend for Wehrlein as he finished last in the race due to a poor strategy from his Sauber team, as they pitted him twice during the early safety car period.
