Lewis Hamilton cut Sebastian Vettel’s lead of the Formula 1 championship to just a single point with his fourth consecutive British GP victory.

Hamilton lead from lights to flag in front of his home crowd, who turned up in force at Silverstone just days after the track owner announced it had triggered the break clause in its contract to host the British GP.

Behind him, Valtteri Bottas made it a Mercedes 1-2, having started ninth with a grid penalty.

Tyre failures hit both Ferrari drivers. Kimi Raikkonen, who had spent most of the race second, dropped back to third whilst Vettel was forced to drive longer on his punctured tyre and fell back to seventh.

Max Verstappen, who enjoyed a battle with Vettel early in the race, inherited fourth, his best finish since China at the start of the season.
