Nicky Hayden has died
MotoGP world champion and World Superbike race winner Nicky Hayden has tragically succumbed the injuries he sustained in a cycling accident last week in Italy.
The American had been out cycling last Wednesday afternoon along the Rimini Coast when he struck by a car. Hayden was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred to the intensive care unit of the Maurizio Bufalini hospital.
Doctors attending to him confirmed he had suffered brain damage in the incident, and remained in a critical condition over the weekend.
Hayden’s crowning glory was winning the 2006 MotoGP World Championship in dramatic fashion at Valencia. He also amassed three wins, twenty eight podiums and five pole positions during a twelve-year career in the premier class.
He joined the World Superbike Championship last season with the Ten Kate Honda squad. He took one win in Malaysia and amassed four podiums during his time in the superbike class.
Hayden will be missed in the paddock and was one of the most liked characters in the sport.
