German manufacturer BMW has revealed it will field its own works team in season five of the FIA Formula E Championship.

Joining forces with the Andretti Formula E team this season, the partnership was seen as a way to share resources and gives BMW the perfect opportunity to assess the option of joining the all-electric series as a manufacturer team further down the line.

“Since its inaugural season, Formula E has enjoyed rapid development and is now regarded as a high-level racing series,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt.

“BMW i has contributed actively as Official Vehicle Partner from the word go and has left its mark on the series. Other manufacturers have now followed suit. Everyone involved is delighted to be taking steps to get involved on the sporting and technological side of Formula E. Planning is underway to compete with a works team in season 5. This required our registration as a manufacturer. This was completed by the required deadline.”

Season five is gearing up to be a major season for the FIA Formula E Championship with a redesigned chassis from Spark Racing Technology set to debut, teams will also be switching from using two cars to complete a race distance to one car that will last the duration of a race thanks to a new battery being developed by McLaren Applied Technologies.
