Race Department ATK#25 rider Alex Baldolini will miss next week’s Aragon round of the 2017 World Supersport Championship because of an ankle injury sustained in Thailand.
The Italian ride endured a tough weekend at the Chang International Circuit, mechanical issues with his MV Agusta thwarting his progress during practice.
A crash towards the end of FP2 saw him suffer a fracture to his ankle, and he was forced to watch the race from the sidelines.
Baldolini flew back to Europe to undergo surgery on the injury, and whilst it proved successful he will not be fit enough in time for the third round of the year.
“It is really a pity that I was involved in such a serious accident,” the Italian said.
“We had a good start in Australia and we were able to show we can fight for the top positions. We were doing set-up tests in Buriram when I fell, but I am sure that we would also have been involved in the fight at the front there.”
In his place for the weekend will be CEV Moto2 rider Xavi Cardelus. The Andorran enjoyed a decent season in the Spanish Championship in 2016, finishing the year eighth in the standings with a best result of fourth in Valencia.
“I am very happy and want to thank the Race Department ATK#25 team, who will allow me to debut in the World Supersport Championship,” said Cardelus.
“I was a surprise and an honour that the team though of me as a replacement, and to give me the opportunity to participate in a top level competition.
“The objective is to give my best in this new experience, as it is a very important opportunity for me to take the most of.”
Though disappointed to be missing another race, Baldolini expressed his delight at the team’s choice of replacement and wishes him the best of luck.
“I am very happy we have found Cardelus to replace me; he is young and fast and has experience on Moto2 machines, as well as knowing the track well,” he added.
“We will try to support him the best we can so he can quickly adapt to our MV F3.”
