2016 F1 season review: Driver rankings part one

The 2016 Formula One season was rounded off with a captivating season finale under the floodlights in Abu Dhabi.

After 21 rounds of thrilling racing, it was Nico Rosberg who emerged as world champion, narrowly beating his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton by just five points to take his first world championship.

The German was just one star in a season full of drivers exceeding all expectations. From Max Verstappen taking his first Grand Prix win to Pascal Wehrlein scoring Manor’s first points since 2014, the 2016 grid was never short of talent and is undoubtedly one of the sport’s best ever.

However, not all the drivers experienced a fruitful year, from Esteban Gutierrez’s pointless season on his return to the sport to Rio Haryanto losing his Manor seat after the German Grand Prix.

The following are a list of the drivers who didn’t quite shine as brightly in 2016 as the likes of Rosberg or Verstappen but still had moments that more than made their case for been on the fastest grid in the world…
