Star Driver: Mid-Season 2016
At the end of the 2015 season, I had the opportunity to review all of my Star Driver choices and choose my Star Driver of the entire season, so it’s with great pleasure that I write this mid-season Star Driver article. After reviewing the performance of all of the drivers from the beginning of the 2016 season, I can honestly say that I have been pleasantly surprised by so many of the new and returning drivers. Having said that, one young man has stood out to me in almost every race. Max Verstappen has once again stolen the title of Star Driver and I find it extraordinarily difficult to think of a single reason why I shouldn’t give this title to him.
I’m beginning to feel a bit like these articles are becoming very Max Verstappen based but when a driver constantly pushes their boundaries and sets new limits, it can’t go without recognition. You’re all aware of how fond I am of Verstappen’s driving style. I can be quoted to say that I could “watch him drive all day” because you can never be too sure on what his next move will be or where he’ll choose to make it.
For me, Max Verstappen has caught the grid on fire. He brings excitement, adrenaline and shock. These three things are vital in the making of a good Grand Prix and by bringing these things to the racetrack, Max Verstappen has made himself a staple in modern Formula One.
I’d like to be able to point out the highlight of Max Verstappen’s season this far but there are too many memorable moments to select just one. I will say that Max has grown immensely in this season and since his move to Red Bull in both his technique and character. It’s very clear that Max has taken this move as an opportunity to learn from his new team and more experienced teammate.
So, it’s been half a season since my last review and Max Verstappen is still topping my list. Will he still be number one when the season ends and be my Star Driver of the 2016 season as well as 2015? I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see.
I cannot wait to see Max back on the track in Belgium. The summer break can’t end soon enough!
