Renault and Williams want Perez for 2017
Both Renault and Williams want to sign Sergio Perez as one of their drivers for the 2017 Formula One season, according to Autosport.
Despite Force India team boss Vijay Mallya saying Perez will remain alongside Nico Hulkenberg for next season, the Mexican has yet to officially confirm his future.
“The decision is not only down to me, as I’m a very lucky driver to have so much support, and if we’re moving around teams we take the decision together with the group of sponsors I have, and that decision has not been taken.”
The 26-year-old hopes his future will be confirmed after the summer break.
“I hope I can come back after the summer break knowing what the future holds for me, that would be ideal. But you never know in this business, because my deals are not so simple [because of his sponsors]…so it takes longer than for other drivers.”
Perez may be tempted by the prospects of racing for a factory team. Renault may have struggled in 2017 but their substantial budget is surely tempting.
If Perez was to sign, Renault hope to partner him with rookie and GP3 champion Esteban Ocon.
Renault face competition from Williams for Perez’s signature with both Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa under threat.
