Lewis Hamilton says he was not disappointed to miss out on pole position at the Hungaroring.

Hamilton’s final attempt in Q3 was ruined due to Fernando Alonso spinning out at Turn 9 resulting in double waved yellow flags meaning drivers were forced to slow down.

Teammate Nico Rosberg was slightly more fortunate and was able to go fast enough in the final sector after lifting off in S2 to take pole position for tomorrow’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Hamilton is a Hungaroring specialist, winning on four previous occasions and despite this, the three-time F1 champion is not disappointed to miss out on a sixth pole in Hungary.

“I don’t know how much Nico was up but as you said I got the fastest first sector, I was four tenths up so I felt good on the lap, bit unfortunate with Fernando but these things happen.

“I’m not really too disappointed, it was a tricky session and I did the best that I could do and yeah, we still have a long race ahead of us there so I will give it everything I’ve got from there.”

Hamilton nearly failed to make the cut in Q3 after locking up into Turn 1 on his final lap of Q2, however, the Briton scrapped through in 10th place.

“I wouldn’t say my heart was in my mouth but when I came in and saw how close it was, that wasn’t great. I went wide at Turn 1. The rest of the lap I pushed as hard as I could, I was up on my previous time but I knew everyone would be quicker.

“I lost too much time there but very fortunate to get through and that’s why, even though I’m second, I’m just grateful I’m here and this puts me in a position to fight for the win tomorrow.”
