Bird looking to secure third on home soil
Despite still having a mathematical chance of winning the Formula E drivers’ title, Sam Bird says he is focusing on consolidating third in the standings in front of his home crowd this weekend.
Bird sits 59 points behind championship leader Lucas di Grassi meaning he would need both di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi, who sits one point behind the Brazilian, to have major issues in both races.
The Brit admits it is a shame that this year will be the last time Formula E will be heading to Battersea Park as the race in London is not on next year’s calendar.
“For me this race is about securing third place. I’m not really focusing on the battle between two unless I can see it in my rear view mirrors. Consolidating third place in the team and driver championship in my home city is my aim. It’s a shame that this is the last is Battersea Park but I hope in the future we can race in this great city.”
After taking one win and three pole positions this season, Bird believes this campaign has been better than expected and hopes to be in the title fight next season.
“The season has been better than I thought it would be for sure. It is difficult to extract the speed out. My driving style has been somewhat flamboyant and it’s difficult to drive on the edge because it’s so on the edge. I’m very close to the walls…sometimes too close! Next year I hope I can be a bit closer to the two guys next to me.”
Bird is expected to remain with DS Virgin for next season.
