Star Driver: 2016 Monaco GP
Monaco is a race that no one can ignore. Not only is it loved by many but it’s also filled with thrills, collisions and surprise podium appearances. You can never be sure who will cross the line in the top three positions. However, after Daniel Ricciardo’s performance in qualifying, I think we were all sure that he’d appear on one of the three steps of the podium, and we were right! For his extended success across the weekend, Daniel Ricciardo is my Star Driver.
As I’ve already touched on, Ricciardo drove an incredible weekend. Due to team error, he didn’t manage to finish in first place. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone as disappointed to be in second. However, I think his disappointment was entirely justified as he completed his task with his usual skills. Something about him seemed hungrier for success this weekend. Whether this was him wanting to show Red Bull that he could also win (as his teammate did in Spain) or whether this was the Monaco effect, Ricciardo drove with new passion yesterday. This made it even more difficult to watch him on the podium.
Despite the disappointment Ricciardo faced, he handled the situation very maturely. He didn’t stand and smile on the podium, he didn’t spray his champagne, and he clearly didn’t feel the need to celebrate.
I hope Ricciardo continues to race with fire for the rest of his career. His style is one that belongs on the racetrack. Congratulations on your incredible weekend, Daniel Ricciardo. You have continued Red Bull’s success and done yourself proud, not once did you stop pushing. Here’s to the next race!
