Swiss rider Tom Luthi set the fastest time in the first free practice session of the 2016 Moto2 season.

Luthi set a time of 1:59.731 to top the timesheets, with the Garage Plus Interwetten rider continuing the form he showed in pre-season testing.

Britain’s Sam Lowes was 0.179s off Luthi in second place. Lowes had a tough evening however, as he fell from his Kalex machine twice during the session.

2015 World Champion Johann Zarco was third, with the Frenchman 0.246s behind Lowes. German riders Jonas Folger and Marcel Schrotter rounded out the top five.

Nakagami and Syahrin finished the evening in sixth and seventh place. Simone Corsi ended the night eight, with the Italian being the first of the non-Kalex riders, with all but six of the 2016 grid using the German chassis.

Danny Kent, the 2015 Moto3 Champ, finished 15th place on his Leopard Racing Kalex, finishing two spots behind his teammate and former Moto3 sparring partner Miguel Oliveira.

The next Moto2 session takes place at 16:55 GMT.
