Nico Hulkenberg says he hopes 2016 will be his best season in Formula One as he goes in search of his first ever podium finish.
Force India enjoyed their best ever finish in the constructors’ championship last season and the German himself achieved success at the Le Mans 24 hour. Despite these successes, he struggled to regularly score points. eventually finishing 20 points behind his Force India teammate Sergio Perez in the drivers’ championship.
Hulkenberg is also yet to finish a race on the podium in his Formula One career, which in the past he has admitted annoys him and is something he wants to change sooner rather than later.
“I’m hungry,” Hulkenberg told Auto Motor und Sport. “I want to attack. And I want 2016 to be my best year in F1. There is no reason why Force India should not look to build on the good performance we have shown since last year when we put the B-spec version of the car on the road.”
Whilst Hulkenberg is confident in Force India’s ability and potential in 2016, he is also aware of the challenge that will be posed by McLaren, Red Bull, Toro Rosso and even Haas F1.
“We are also clear that there a number of potential rivals who can be a tough nut to crack: McLaren when it gets more power from Honda, Toro Rosso with Ferrari engines, Red Bull anyway. Also Haas F1 I guess from the beginning will be strong. Our approach should perhaps be that we aim to be at the level of Williams.”
