McLaren have dropped reserve and test driver Kevin Magnussen for next season as they have decided not to extend his contract with the team according to Autosport.
Magnussen was dropped as their race driver for the incoming Fernando Alonso at the end of 2014. The Dane has remained as their test and reserve driver for the duration of 2015, racing in the Australian Grand Prix in place of the injured Fernando Alonso.
This news means one of two things either McLaren have allowed Magnussen to leave the team to join either Renault or Haas F1 in 2016 or Magnussen is no longer in the frame for a Formula One drive and will allow him to pursue other options such as IndyCar.
Another McLaren protege, Stoffel Vandoorne, who was recently crowned 2015 GP2 series champion, is also without a Formula One drive for next season but is likely to take up Magnussen’s post as official test and reserve driver for the team.
